RootsWeb: CATAWBA-WEST-L ABERNATHY
Many on this mail list have expressed interest in the Abernathy
family, and others have expressed an interest in the flavor of the
West of Catawba region. Therefore, I have been going through my old
files, and those of my aunt who worked on our Lincoln County families
from 1945 until her death in Dec. 1970. Perhaps the following item
will be interesting to both groups. A word of CAUTION. There are
possibly errors in the lineage given in this item. An “insert” will
appear at the appropriate point. It will take several mailings to
complete this. I hope you will all find it enjoyable and enlightening
about another era.

ROBERT LABAN ABERNATHY AND RUTHERFORD COLLEGE

An Educational Believe It or Not — A Paper read before the
Historical Society of the Western North Carolina Conference, Dilworth
Methodist Church, Charlotte, North Carolina, October 8, 1847 by Dr. C.
Excelle Rozzelle.

Everything must have a beginning, even though that beginning be
far away and a long time ago. There is in old Scotland a little river
by the name of Nethy. Place the Scotch prefix “Aber” before the
river’s name and you have the family name, ‘Abernethy’ which meant
then and means now — ‘At the mouth of the River Nethy.’ Thus you
see how the name before us began many centuries ago and what it
signifies — ‘The man who lived at the mouth of the River Nethy.’

Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter: How Many Ancestors Do You Have?
How Many Ancestors Do You Have?

A newsletter reader asked a simple question this week that generates a longer answer:

How many individuals does it take to make up 42 generations? Is there a website or other source that would help me calculate the answer?

I am sure there are such web sites but you can also calculate the same numbers within a few seconds by using Excel or any other spreadsheet

Too Much Genealogy?

Too Much Genealogy?
Too Much Genealogy?

Article from Roger Reid submitted to the OGS Families, February 2000

A humorous look at the lives of people researching their family history. Perhaps you have spent too much time on your family history if some of these fit you.

* You are the only person in the bridge/poker club who knows what a Soundex is.
* You have more pictures of tombstones than of the kids.
* “I need to spend just a little more time at the library or courthouse” means forget the cleaning, washing, dinner, chores. The day is shot anyway.
* The mailman can’t believe that you got this much mail from someone you don’t even know.
* You explain to your mother why you can’t go 25 miles for Sunday dinner, but can go 100 miles to check out another cemetery.
* “As soon as I check out this census record, I’ll fix dinner” means “call the local pizza parlour”.
* Your kids think picnics in cemeteries are normal or that EVERYBODY does it.
* Some of your best friends live over 200 miles away.
* You can’t drive past a cemetery without wondering if your ancestors might be buried there.
* You have to watch the credits of a movie to see if any of the surnames are ones you are researching.
* You ask all the people you meet what their grandparents surnames are.
* You move to a new town and the first thing you look for is a historical or genealogical society in the area.
* You go on vacation and beg your hubby/wife to please drive 80 miles out of the way so that you can try and find your granddaddy’s grave in 100 degree heat.
* Youthful fantasies of travelling to exotic places are replaced with plans to get to those little towns with graveyards, or larger towns with Archives.
* Your fear of snakes and bugs is overshadowed by the need to get through those brambles to that old gravestone.
* Old friends who knew you before you were into genealogy begin sending clippings about dead or live people with your surnames.
* You worry about the roof’s leaking, only if the drips threaten your genealogy section.
* When you can recite all the counties of a province/state you have researched but where you have never lived.
* When you find your ancestor’s execution by hanging, or burning at the stake, far more interesting than the mass murder that just took place next door.
* You’re not invited to family functions because your relatives are tired of filling out family group sheets.
* Your neighbours think you are crazy, your friends wonder, and YOU know you are.

If you have ever wondered what day of the week your ancestor was born, married or passed away, this genealogy calendar is for you! I have taken the information for this genealogy calendar from a sheet I picked up at a genealogy conference. There was no indication of the source of this calendar.

JDA’s Familytree — Explanation of Symbols
How about David ben Jesse, first King in Jerusalem? No one doubts that he is a historic figure, but is he really your 84-great grandfather?

Answer: Many of the links in my database are wrong — they should be marked as “poss.” or even “prob. not.” If/when I get these all corrected, King David will probably be “demoted” to just a possible ancestor.

However, King David almost certainly is my ancestor, and yours too, probably in billions of distinct ways! This may seem surprising, but it is just a mathematical fact. If we have many millions of ancestors, it is a consequence that most of those ancestors will have millions of descendants.

This is not to say, of course, that every ancient person has a billion living descendants — most have none at all! For example, William Shakspere of Stratford, perhaps the greatest writer of all time, had three children and four grandchildren, but no further descendants.
