Son of John Turner Abernethy and Martha Anna (Scott) Abernethy; married, December 19, 1895, to Minnie M. May. Democrat. Lawyer; Presidential Elector for North Carolina, 1900, 1904; U.S. Representative from North Carolina 3rd District, 1922-35; defeated, 1934. Methodist. Member, Freemasons; Knights Templar; Shriners; Elks; Junior Order; Kiwanis; Knights of Pythias; Odd Fellows; Redmen; Woodmen. Died in New Bern, Craven County, N.C., February 23, 1955. Interment at Cedar Grove Cemetery, New Bern, N.C.
