WASHINGTON – The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee called Sunday for criminal prosecution of The New York Times, saying its report Friday on government surveillance of confidential banking records “compromised America’s anti-terrorist policies.”

A senior judge has quashed control orders made against six men under the Government’s anti-terrorist legislation.

Mr Justice Sullivan, sitting at the High Court in London, said the orders were “incompatible” with Article 5 of the European Convention on Human rights.

(CBS) You can always tell when the president’s popularity is getting dangerously low or when an election is coming up. That’s when those in power — and those who would like to be in power — shamelessly start pandering to the American public.

That’s when they try to imply that they’re more patriotic than the other guys. So they trot out issues like sex and violence on TV, illegal immigration, and English as America’s official language. In addition to demonstrating what good Americans they are, these issues also distract attention from the fact that they’re not dealing with other important things — like a war in which people are dying every day.

This week, they dusted off an old favorite — a proposal for a constitutional amendment that would ban desecrating the American flag. It failed to pass the Senate by one vote, but I promise you, it’ll be back. ..”
