Griffith Family

Griffith Family
First Generation

The Griffith family of Anne Arundel County owes its inception of one William Griffith into the Providence by Michel Stuppel and Stephen Barnard. These two enterprisers in June, 1675 appeared in His Lordship’s Land Office in St. Mary’s City, for 1750 acres of land for the transportation into the Providence of thirty five persons, among them, William Griffith. — Early Settlers of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Henry Wright Newman.

William Griffith married Sarah Maccubbin, daughter of John Maccubbin and Elinor (Carroll?) and by 1694 owned his first tract of Land – Griffith’s Lot. It is not know exactly when William Griffith died but his will was probated in 1699. After his death, his widow married Thomas Reynolds of Anne Arundel County, St. Anne’s Parish on November 30, 1699. Sarah Maccubin Griffith Reynolds died in 1716.

After John Maccubbin’s death, his widow, Elinor, married as her second husband John Howard, Sr. When John Howard, Sr. died in about 1695/96, he was to Elinor’s grandson: “I give unto my Grandson Orlando Griffis the Moirty or one half part of a tract of land being in the aforesaid Middle Branch and running up the Little Falls Containing two hundred acres of less…” When Elinor wrote her will in 1705 (probated in 1711) she mentions “my Dau. Sarah Reynolds.” — Extracted from John Maccubbin of Anne Arundel Co. and His Children, written by Rudolf Loeser. Maryland Genealogical Society Bullentin, Spring 1999, Volume 40, Number 2.

Freedom of Religion is for everyone! This includes Druids.

Person of this belief are not, and should not be confused with satan worshippers (statanists)…

Druidism is closely connected to nature, and natural healing practices.

28 August 2005 – Warning, Katrina huge!

“HURRICANE WARNINGS… Are in effect from Morgan City to the Alabama/Florida
border. Hurricane Katrina is curving to the northwest as expected. The
hurricane is expected to gradually turn north northwest, then north and then
north northeast over the next 24 hours. This will bring the center of
Category Five Katrina near the extreme southeast coast of Louisiana near
Grand Isle or Buras during the early morning hours on Monday. It will pass
directly over or very near the City of New Orleans, with disastrous results
during the morning. Then it will make a final landfall somewhere near the
mouth of the Pearl River on the Mississippi/Alabama border. It will then
head north northeast into southern Mississippi, edging closer and closer to
the state border and then into western and northwestern Alabama.

LOCAL IMPACTS: Katrina will bring 50-80 mph winds to western counties
starting Monday afternoon., generally west of Highway 43 to Tuscaloosa.
Residents should abandon mobile homes west of US-43 by 3 pm Monday. Winds
in the Birmingham area will increase to 40-50 mph starting late tomorrow
afternoon through Tuesday morning. Tree damage will be most extensive over
western sections, but as far east as Birmingham, some trees will be felled.
Over East Alabama, winds will be 20-30 mph. Heavy rains of 2-8 inches will
affect Central Alabama, with the heaviest amounts over western sections.
Tornadoes will be possible over all of Alabama Monday afternoon through
Tuesday morning.

COASTAL IMPACTS: A storm surge of 15-20 feet with isolated amounts as high
as 25 feet will be observed near and east of the landfall point. Surge
values will be 12-20 feet in Mobile Bay and up to eight feet in the Florida
Panhandle. Katrina is a large storm, much larger than Camille, and her
impact will be felt over a wide area. Hurricane force winds will occur 90
miles east and about 50-75 west of the center. Max winds will be around 170
mph at landfall with gusts over 200 mph possible. The NWS New Orleans has
issued an Armageddon type statement outlining the expected destruction. It
mentions that persons exposed to the flying debris will face certain death.
Even vehicles will go airborne. High rise buildings will sway dangerously,
to the point of collapse. All low, wood framed apartments will be
destroyed. Finally, they warn that most of the area will be uninhabitable
for weeks, perhaps longer. We can only pray not.

Nature can be brutal.

Are you prepared, to face or leave the winds? If too close to the estimated landfall zone; best advice is to evacuate.

Take care.

I sit at a desk that once belonged to my grandfather, Herbert R. Justice; going through books and papers.

Some of the books have price stickers, partially left on the cover — so I’m peeling sticky paper off, tiny bits at a time.

So far, the prices/value of the books I have gone through have run the range from $.75 – around $50.00.

As for what we might sell them for, price as it were, will be set later. For now I am very hyper (had a soda, and a good lunch) — so I want to get as much done about pricing while I have the energy.

I spent much of the day yesterday (Friday) moving things around and vacuuming the carpet; thus feeling every bit of the boxes that I need to go through — priced or shelved, and then start sorting old papers that keep piling up around my work-room.

While Dave was cutting grass, and doing improvements in the greenhouse, yesterday, I was realizing that I felt up to doing more than I have in several days. The weather has been good — other than the impending hurricane (Katrina) that has already hit Florida. The worst of the wet stuff is expected sometime Monday night. That gives Dave (and Bill, possibly me too) time to get some work done in prepartion for the “blow”.

The greenhouse looks lots different, and the quick cement bags are waiting, so is the cement mixer, a new heavy-duty water hose, along with other needed tools, alas — the temperatures are up since it is midday — so Dave and I are indoors, until later when the temps are not quite as bad.

Ahh, yes, I have more books to price — then to check for empty shelf space in the stacks.

I will write again very soon. I have many things I want to move, add, and update on this site — linking them to the “blog”. Of course, I never know what I might post next; but the beauty of it is that no matter when I post it, it will be saved exactly in the category (-ies) that I place it.

Take care, enjoy the sun while you can.
