HOUSTON — NASA says it is grounding future space shuttle flights because foam debris that brought down Columbia is still a risk.

NASA says the mysterious object that came flying off the space shuttle Discovery’s fuel tank during liftoff was a large piece of foam insulation.

That was the very thing that caused Columbia to break apart during re-entry two and a half years ago, killing all seven astronauts aboard. But this time, the foam didn’t hit the spacecraft.

More than a few uneasy moments, until the status of shuttle’s tile insulation is found.

Jacksonville News – Committee considers city office relocation options
Committee considers city office relocation options

In Friday’s City Finance Committee meeting a discussion broke out concerning a dilemma. The building the city purchased at Union Yarn Mill is at a stand-still in development. The idea was for it to house city hall, the library, and the senior center. Now, the city has been approached with the possibility of purchasing The Old Henry Farm (Barn) Restaurant as an alternative place to move City Hall. The debate is whether to purchase the Barn or renovate the mill building. All the while, the city must reserve enough revenue to put toward the city’s roads.

- – - – - -

An interesting development, and location; considering that the “Barn” is not in the central area of Jacksonville, Alabama.

Plus, I’m not even sure if the location is within the city limits — which would probably mean a ‘motion’ to change the city limit boundaries — before they could consider such a move.

We will see…

Alexandria Thrift Store, New light at Highway 431

Filed under: Daily Ramblings, General, Weaver, Alabama — taracat @ 5:31 pm

Thought I would mention several new developments on my “turf” of getting groceries, and weekly trips for sundry items — Weaver & Alexandria, Alabama.

There has been a caution light installed at the interestion by the Alexandria post office, on highway 431. It is still wrapped in plastic; but I have a feeling it should be operational very soon.

Just down the road (south) at the strip where Food Outlet Jr. is located, the old hardware building has been under renovations; and a sign posted that says, “Helping Hands Thrift Store.”

I asked today, and the cashier at Food Outlet said she thought the thrift store would open sometime next week.

WEAVER Additions

There will be a new Dollar General constructed, diagonally across from the Food Outlet Jr, located in Weaver. The store site is located across from the Weaver Hardware store, and has been empty, and been a topic of casual conversation for a while.

So now we know what will be “coming to town,” — soon.

CLOSINGS

The flower shop next door to Downey drugs, has closed. The building has a “for rent” sign is posted in the window, and on the sign by the highway. My guess is this building, judging from the architecture, is the former Alexandira Post Office. It is a small building with maybe three large pane glass windows in front (tinted for blocking the sun).

More to come as I find out something further.

26 July 2005 – Tuesday Ramble

Filed under: Books, Family, Genealogy, General, Local Bands, Music — taracat @ 5:09 pm

Well, after two days of a ‘ghost’ headache, I went and bought some decongestants, while doing a grocery run.

It had a list of things; and the sinus meds was one near the top. When I got back we ate a late lunch (had a late breakfast, today); I then cooled off enough and took the sinus meds. That was about an hour ago, and I think the sinus pressure is starting to ease off a bit.

Sometimes this decongestants make drowsy, or silly; but I hope it won’t be either today — I have books to post to the database, and photos that I want to get into online albums.

EMAIL SIFTING

I also got around to adding more filters to my email program (Mozilla), and deleting massive amounts of ’spam’. Now I have a growing list of topic folders for: newsletter, genealogy, family notes, ancestry (ads), music, echoes-2005 (festival stuff), and accounts (for subscription notices).

Organization has always been a challenge for me.

MAIL (US postal sytem) & Genealogy

I have several items that I need to get together, addres and put in the “post” box, to go out tommorow — one of which may be concerning a HONYCUTT relative who live in North Carolina. A SILVER, distant kin/cousin, said I should contact about the Honeycutt individual — but that the addressee would have to use the US Mail.

I have kept putting off; and really can’t do much more on this family line, until I get an answer from this possible ‘lead.’

LAST MINUTE RAMBLE

Maybe now wasn’t such a good time to try and compose a post — with the sinus meds (pressure) and just having eaten. I seem to be jmping from one topic to another.

So for now, I think I will ‘hit the books’.

Will post again later.

Keep cool! (Way to-o-o-o hot outdoors right now.)

NASA sends shuttle back into space after long pause

By Irene Klotz and Michael Christie

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) – NASA successfully launched space shuttle Discovery on Tuesday after a 2-1/2 year struggle to rebuild the shuttle program following the fatal Columbia accident.

The shuttle, carrying seven crew members, soared into slightly hazy skies, leaving behind a trail of smoke and flames, while the roar of its solid booster rockets rattled windows and shook the ground across Cape Canaveral in Florida.

“On behalf of the many millions of people who believe so deeply in what we do, good luck, Godspeed and have a little fun up there,” NASA launch director Mike Leinbach told the crew a few minutes before liftoff at 10:39 a.m. EDT (1439 GMT).

Great to hear.

I’ll be keeping tabs, NASA has had some trials & hearbreaks over the decades; not just with the Shuttle.

NASA may bend rules to launch Discovery

MARCIA DUNN

Associated Press

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – With the countdown entering its final hours and a fuel gauge problem still unexplained, NASA said it is prepared to bend its long-standing safety rules to launch the shuttle Tuesday on the first flight since Columbia’s doomed mission 2 1/2 years ago.

Hopefully all will be well with the launch, whenever it is successfully completed.

25 july 2005 — Hard To Find Books, Star Trek, Summer Heat & Genealogy

Filed under: Books, Daily Ramblings, Family, Genealogy, General, News & Health — taracat @ 5:12 pm

Hello Again.

Been hoping that the “glitches” with the MySQL (database) would be resolved {it has temparily – but, a move still is in order} — this and several other sites have been down several times this week.

When the ‘move’ occurs, it should not affect anything other than where my information/files are stored. If all goes well, you — the reader — will not notice any interuption in the “blog”.

For now I will go on to the topics listed in the topic(s).

Several hard-to-find books I have run across have me stumped as to whether to sell them, keep them; or read them then sell them. Even with the millions of items on the internet I have run into dead-ends trying to get a value/price on these (used) book titles:

1)
“Green Garnet Mystery” – By: Jane Selkirk.
Published by Dodd, Mead & Company, New York – 1946
Green Hard Cover/Art cover, with 3 young people and a grandfather clock — Ex-library, 210 pages.

The book has minor wounds to several pages, as well as pencil marks inside front and back cover; but the binding is tight, the spine is straight; overall it is in good condition.

2)
“A Treasury of Modern Mysteries” (2 volumes)
Published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York – 1973
(Book Club Edition)

Volume 1 – Features stories by:
Agatha Christie, Joyce Carol Oates, George Fox, Bill Pronzini, Dorothy Salisbury Davis, Margery Allingham, Daphne du Maurier, Donald E. Westlake, Arthur Porges, Thomas Kid and Ross Macdonald

Volume 2 – Features stories by:
Ira Levin, Goeges Simenon, John D. McaDonald, James Holding, Stanley Ellin, Ian Fleming, and Truman Capote.

Both volumes have dust jacket, in fair condition. One volume has red boards with yellow/gold binding with brown title on spine; the other has gold boards with red binding and brown title lettering.

Volume one has 463 pages, volume 2 has 536 pages. Both books are in very good condition, with expected foxing/aging of the pages — small tears at top and bottom edge of the dust jacket, and general edge/shelf wear to the book and jackets. (There is also another copy of volume 2 with light blue boards and binding, with dark blue title lettering, also 536 pages– dust jacket has water stains at the top inside spine.)

All three books have rough-cut page edges, characteristic of some book club printings.

A small mystery…about mystery books. But I will keep looking for information about them.

“STAR TREK”

James Doohan died several days ago, and I’m sure many people will mourn for the actor.

I think the character he played, Scotty, was the most ‘real’ person in one of the earliest shows I watched on television. It is interesting to note that he was not only an actor, but a veteran as well.

Goodbye, “Mr. Scott”, and Mr. Doohan, we will miss you!

SUMMER HEAT

Well the rain stopped about two days ago; then the heat set-in. This was accompanied by warning of not over-heating when outdoors.

Thus, there hasn’t been much activity outdoors; until later in the day when things start to cool. I look at the clock and think — I remind myself — I need to take care of some chores outside, I’d been waiting for until the worst of the heat subsided.

I will however, drink a sip or two more of a cool drink, type few mores lines; hoping to remember what I else I wanted to write.

FAMILY / GENEALOGY

The “JUSTICE” family reunion is scheduled for July 30, 2005 — in Vincent. It will be the first reunion in quite a number of years for the Justice kin. Suzanne, a first cousin has found several items on my website — which she seems to think would be appropriate to print/bring to the reunion.

She also suggested that I bring print-outs, or possibly my laptop; for information on the Justice family tree. Both are good ideas; and I will be considering each equally.

As for other genealogy updates — I have added several more generations of Spier/Speir/Speer to my family tree file. The interesting fact about this, is that these are ancestors of Mr. A. E. Turner (through his mother’s line).

At present I have not been able to find an ‘intersection’ with Hester Ann Taylor Speir’s (my maternal ancestor’s) ancestors; but the locations are very close in geographical areas, as well as the time/years in which the individuals were born.

This is yet another trail of ‘bread crumbs’ that may introduce me to interesting biographical sketches; without giving me any solid kinship connections, but only time and research can confirm or deny this possibility.

Alas, the chores do await. And the sooner I start them sooner I will be finished. Since the website seems to be ‘behaving’ I should be back later this evening with another post (or 2).

I have read quite a number of mystery, and historical books; that I want to do reviews on.

So, stay tuned.

The Merovingian Kings

- – - – -

Ancient lineage of royalty in europe; and some of the lines I have researching recently.

Interesting, even if there is no ‘blood kinship’ to my ancestors.

Then again, there may be. I’ve been opitimisitic on many other things in my life, why not the ancestor’s ancestors?

Tis late, yet again [yawn...sorry.]

Been making certain that whichever browser i might use will allow me to make a quick post to my ‘blog’ without having to track things down.

I believe I have most of it set-up.

Until later, keep cool, dry thoughts for this very hot and humid June evening.
