Hello Again.
Been hoping that the “glitches” with the MySQL (database) would be resolved {it has temparily – but, a move still is in order} — this and several other sites have been down several times this week.
When the ‘move’ occurs, it should not affect anything other than where my information/files are stored. If all goes well, you — the reader — will not notice any interuption in the “blog”.
For now I will go on to the topics listed in the topic(s).
Several hard-to-find books I have run across have me stumped as to whether to sell them, keep them; or read them then sell them. Even with the millions of items on the internet I have run into dead-ends trying to get a value/price on these (used) book titles:
1)
“Green Garnet Mystery” – By: Jane Selkirk.
Published by Dodd, Mead & Company, New York – 1946
Green Hard Cover/Art cover, with 3 young people and a grandfather clock — Ex-library, 210 pages.
The book has minor wounds to several pages, as well as pencil marks inside front and back cover; but the binding is tight, the spine is straight; overall it is in good condition.
2)
“A Treasury of Modern Mysteries” (2 volumes)
Published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York – 1973
(Book Club Edition)
Volume 1 – Features stories by:
Agatha Christie, Joyce Carol Oates, George Fox, Bill Pronzini, Dorothy Salisbury Davis, Margery Allingham, Daphne du Maurier, Donald E. Westlake, Arthur Porges, Thomas Kid and Ross Macdonald
Volume 2 – Features stories by:
Ira Levin, Goeges Simenon, John D. McaDonald, James Holding, Stanley Ellin, Ian Fleming, and Truman Capote.
Both volumes have dust jacket, in fair condition. One volume has red boards with yellow/gold binding with brown title on spine; the other has gold boards with red binding and brown title lettering.
Volume one has 463 pages, volume 2 has 536 pages. Both books are in very good condition, with expected foxing/aging of the pages — small tears at top and bottom edge of the dust jacket, and general edge/shelf wear to the book and jackets. (There is also another copy of volume 2 with light blue boards and binding, with dark blue title lettering, also 536 pages– dust jacket has water stains at the top inside spine.)
All three books have rough-cut page edges, characteristic of some book club printings.
A small mystery…about mystery books. But I will keep looking for information about them.
“STAR TREK”
James Doohan died several days ago, and I’m sure many people will mourn for the actor.
I think the character he played, Scotty, was the most ‘real’ person in one of the earliest shows I watched on television. It is interesting to note that he was not only an actor, but a veteran as well.
Goodbye, “Mr. Scott”, and Mr. Doohan, we will miss you!
SUMMER HEAT
Well the rain stopped about two days ago; then the heat set-in. This was accompanied by warning of not over-heating when outdoors.
Thus, there hasn’t been much activity outdoors; until later in the day when things start to cool. I look at the clock and think — I remind myself — I need to take care of some chores outside, I’d been waiting for until the worst of the heat subsided.
I will however, drink a sip or two more of a cool drink, type few mores lines; hoping to remember what I else I wanted to write.
FAMILY / GENEALOGY
The “JUSTICE” family reunion is scheduled for July 30, 2005 — in Vincent. It will be the first reunion in quite a number of years for the Justice kin. Suzanne, a first cousin has found several items on my website — which she seems to think would be appropriate to print/bring to the reunion.
She also suggested that I bring print-outs, or possibly my laptop; for information on the Justice family tree. Both are good ideas; and I will be considering each equally.
As for other genealogy updates — I have added several more generations of Spier/Speir/Speer to my family tree file. The interesting fact about this, is that these are ancestors of Mr. A. E. Turner (through his mother’s line).
At present I have not been able to find an ‘intersection’ with Hester Ann Taylor Speir’s (my maternal ancestor’s) ancestors; but the locations are very close in geographical areas, as well as the time/years in which the individuals were born.
This is yet another trail of ‘bread crumbs’ that may introduce me to interesting biographical sketches; without giving me any solid kinship connections, but only time and research can confirm or deny this possibility.
Alas, the chores do await. And the sooner I start them sooner I will be finished. Since the website seems to be ‘behaving’ I should be back later this evening with another post (or 2).
I have read quite a number of mystery, and historical books; that I want to do reviews on.
So, stay tuned.
