Longleaf Festival, Anniston/McClellan

This year’s festival is offering a wide array of music. Things get kicked off at 12 p.m. with Miss Alabama Jamie Langley, followed by the JAXPAN Steel Drum Band , the Sterling Silver Band (classic rock), Foggy Hollow (bluegrass), Maybe Later (Southern rock), Dustin Howard (rock) and Laura Dodd and Tom Walker (country).

2. To learn “lost” arts

The theme for this year’s festival is “Rediscovering the Lost Arts” a collaboration between the JSU Field School and JSU’s Continuing Education Office. Festival-goers will be able to watch artists in action as they do storytelling, weaving, soap and candle making, beading, wood carving, quilting, basketry and many more hand-crafted arts. There will also be more traditional artists and vendors with photography, paintings and drawings.

SNOW DAY — but no snowman.

No, there wasn’t enough to build a snowman; and the temps did not rise much. Thus, I stayed indoors, and nursed a pounding head, and kept warm.

I took a few photos the afternoon when it snowed, then sleeted — several days back (Will post them soon).

Cats were very happy for their dinner, accompanied by the usual ear scratch(s).

Me?

Wanting to get rid of the sinus pressure that has had me down most of the day. Can think, but not very sharp in general.

Anyway, the game that had been scheduled for today was postponed/delayed due to the possibly bad road conditions that could have come with the snow/sleet. A few folks stopped by this morning, not hearing of the change in schedule — the snow started to get heavy, so they decided they had better head back home.

I am positive I had something else I wanted to add to this ramble, but for the life of me, I can’t think of what it was — now.So I close, and say “keep warm.”

Hot, Miserable, snake bit?

Filed under: Daily Ramblings, General, Human Interest News, Weaver, Alabama — taracat @ 1:52 pm

It’s a terribly hot day — one of our younger cats, “Cobweb” is having a really bad day…she gave birth to her first litter of kittens, then she shows up for a drink water this afternoon, with a swollen neck & chin. Seems she has had another encounter with a snake or frog.

She appears in good health, other than the swelling; but does not look too happy.

I do hope that she will be able to eat the evening meal with everyone else; I have no clue where the kittens are hidden; but given she was bitten, I would hazard a guess that they are in some heavy undergrowth, nearby.

As for everyone else — people as well as cats — we are trying to hide from the heat today. Dave is reading in the shade at the creek; I am about to park in front of the AC and read a magazine or book for a while.

As for what I have done today? I have folded clothes, cooked two meals, washed a load of clothes, and have a second load to get washing now.

I will write again later this evening — barring any unexpected diversions.

Keep cool.

Things were not as bad as they could, easily, have been — just keep in mind that the HAZMAT “shelter in place” kits are for ANY possibly hazardous chemical accident — from any source.

We, in the area, are very fortunate that things were not worse…

21 December 2005

Two mornings ago; I thought I heard frantic ‘mewing’ from around Billy’s bus (across-the-way). I strolled out, in my rubber-soled house shoes — whistled, called, and walked around, still hearing a faint ‘mew, mew, mew’ — but nothing could I find.

The day went on it usual routine: hot oatmeal cereal for breakfast, feeding the cats their ‘cereal’, hauling wood in for the stove/heat — later, working on books and doing things on the computer.

While still in the early afternoon, Neal and Billy came by; “look we brought you…” — it was a very loud, very furry, multi-colored long-haired kitten. It had stumbled, ridden under a car; or was dropped off at the other driveway.

She is a very demanding; but very loving kitten.

DAY TWO:

Yesterday, she cranks up the frantic mewing extremely early in the morning (wanting food, at best guess). Of course it the temps had gone down into the teens that night; and that is the coldest temps we’ve had thus far. The kitten had evidently been raised indoors; and did not know what to do; but dance from one cold paw to another; ‘mewing’ constantly, until Dave went out see see what was the matter with her.

He scooped her up, brought her in, gave her some warm milk; then came and asked if there was some can catfood. I rousted up a can; he fixed her saucer of food; and she continued to dance; but the mewing had eased; and she would alternate between ‘mew’ and ‘purr-rrr’ every few minutes.

While inside; Dave said she went under, behind and around everything in the kitchen (cleaning cobwebs out from everywhere!). Thus she has earned the name of COBWEB, and seems to know it’s her name, already.

Later, (day two) she was introduced to the other cats, during feeding time. About half of them hissed at her; Pepper swatted at her; 2 did not know what to think, but Shaggy treated her like family.

(Guess they could relate; being long-hair cats and new to the group.)

DAY THREE:

Cobweb has gotten a little bit less noisy; but still demands to be noticed. She spent a good bit of time and energy following Dave to the creek, then with him down to the barn, around the yard; and finally back up to the back stoop.

With all of this; she still gets frantic; and ‘mews’ when she loses site of the person she was with.

Cobweb has an abundance of energy, knows what it means to play; and seems to making friends with the other cats in the clan, one-by-one. Thus far, I have seen her playing with Daniel Tiger, and trying to make friends with Ghost (the white tomcat) — but he doesn’t know what to think of this “noisy little female”…

Just wanted to let you know the latest excitement from the farm.

Hope you are having a good December; and that you don’t find yourself in a frantic last-mintue search for the “perfect gift” for someone on your list that you missed on the previous shopping trip(s).

Take care,

Alexandria Thrift Store, New light at Highway 431

Filed under: Daily Ramblings, General, Weaver, Alabama — taracat @ 5:31 pm

Thought I would mention several new developments on my “turf” of getting groceries, and weekly trips for sundry items — Weaver & Alexandria, Alabama.

There has been a caution light installed at the interestion by the Alexandria post office, on highway 431. It is still wrapped in plastic; but I have a feeling it should be operational very soon.

Just down the road (south) at the strip where Food Outlet Jr. is located, the old hardware building has been under renovations; and a sign posted that says, “Helping Hands Thrift Store.”

I asked today, and the cashier at Food Outlet said she thought the thrift store would open sometime next week.

WEAVER Additions

There will be a new Dollar General constructed, diagonally across from the Food Outlet Jr, located in Weaver. The store site is located across from the Weaver Hardware store, and has been empty, and been a topic of casual conversation for a while.

So now we know what will be “coming to town,” — soon.

CLOSINGS

The flower shop next door to Downey drugs, has closed. The building has a “for rent” sign is posted in the window, and on the sign by the highway. My guess is this building, judging from the architecture, is the former Alexandira Post Office. It is a small building with maybe three large pane glass windows in front (tinted for blocking the sun).

More to come as I find out something further.
